Vicomtech presents its FeMBMS 5G Broadcast contributions at the Symposium organized by the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance in Beijing
Dr. Javier Morgade, Senior Researcher at Vicomtech, has presented in Beijing the contributions of the Vicomtech Digital Media group in FeMBMS 5G Broadcast, as a continuation of the development presented last June
07.01.2020
The intervention has focused on introducing Vicomtech's latest contributions to the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (5G Software Alliance for democratizing wireless innovation) related to the development of a complete transmission and reception chain of the new FeMBMS TV standard. The new features presented include the FeMBMS protocols related to the transmission and network interconnection mechanisms of future base stations (Node B), thus complementing the developments also carried out by Vicomtech in the receiving part, which represents a major advance in the state of the art.
Public broadcasters show great interest in promoting this technology due to its potential integration with future 5G networks, thus allowing, in contrast to current 4G deployments, the access to the mobile device market. With this progress, it will be possible to implement broadcasting services in 4.5 / 5G networks to allow, for example, users to have dedicated television services on mobile devices.
Researchers from the Vicomtech Digital Media group are part of the OPEN AIR INTERFACE Core Development Group. The Department has a research line focused on the development and evolution of the component technologies that will enable the future 5G networks. Thanks to its participation in European projects like COGNET, MEC4FAIRTEST, 5G-MOBIX and CDN-X-ALL, it has managed to position itself as a reference research center in these technologies and standards, especially in aspects related to virtualization of radio access technologies (vRAN) and software-defined networks (SDN / NFV). While these projects are oriented to automotive and multimedia content distribution related 5G applications, these technologies have also many applications in other sectors such as industry 4.0 and medicine. Vicomtech therefore focuses on developing specific applications with these enabling technologies in order to apply them in key vertical sectors.
