On March 18, the constitutive act of the Gaia-X Spain Association was held in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), in which Vicomtech participated, to create a data economy hub in the region that will allow the development of national business fabric focused on the creation of open data spaces to promote their safe sharing.
This initiative is part of the Digital Spain Agenda promoted by the Government, which has among its axes moving towards a data economy, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and Big Data so that at least 25% of companies use these technologies in 2025.
The founding act of the Gaia-X Spain Association was attended by the First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, who expressed the Government's support for Spain to lead the data economy in Europe, and in particular, the European tourism data space.
Gaia-X is a private European initiative for the creation of a federated and open data infrastructure. This is an industry contribution to European digital autonomy in cloud computing and storage, offering a secure alternative for data producers to control access to and reuse of data. Vicomtech is a founding partner of this initiative.
Spain joined this project in 2021 to promote the data economy in the country. Since then, a promoter group made up of 57 entities from the data sharing ecosystem, including Vicomtech, has worked to draft the statutes and establish the association.
Last December, the promoters chose Talavera de la Reina as the official headquarters of the association among twelve proposed candidates. The constitution of the Gaia-X Spain Association, to which more than 180 entities are expected to join, in turn represents the official launch of the hub that has a web page in which the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha has participated www.gaiax.es.
