Vicomtech hosts in its facilities the first meeting of the AutoTrust project, based on the development of reliable Artificial Intelligence applied to the CCAM Autonomous Mobility sector.

10.10.2023

It is a reality that, in the last ten years, the CCAM (Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility) sector has experienced exponential growth thanks to breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence, sensors, communications, infrastructure and data platforms.

However, according to the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, CCAM applications are considered medium and high risk when the safety of citizens is in the hands of autonomous driving systems controlled by artificial intelligence components. Currently, artificial intelligence systems are developed through experience gained through extensive training on large datasets, allowing AI models to learn to generalise and be able to perceive, make decisions and act. However, this method of operation makes AI a "black box" in the sense that its behaviour in the real world remains highly unpredictable. Thus, AI is beginning to be perceived as lacking transparency and trustworthiness, and potentially prone to biases and vulnerabilities to attacks, as well as uncertainties regarding the ethical and privacy issues associated with its development.

Thus, Europe is obliged and committed to reliable AI, seeking to adopt methodologies that ensure the transparency of AI, addressing aspects such as robustness, privacy, explainability, responsibility and ethics.

AutoTrust was born in this context, which responding to the European regulatory need for Trusted AI, consists of proposing two technological approaches that evolve the concept of Artificial Intelligence base towards an Explainable AI and towards Artificial Intelligence Evaluation processes. The overall objective is to investigate and propose practical methodologies for the development of Trusted AI that provide transparency to AI systems applied to CCAM applications.

The kick off meeting held at Vicomtech's facilities was the first meeting of the consortium to launch the project, led by the same centre and funded by the Elkartek programme.
