MBMS-based Multi-node 5G Broadcast Performance Assessment

Abstract

5G Broadcast is one of the most relevant verticals of the fifth mobile generation. It brings greater efficiency to the network by providing multicast and broadcast capabilities rather than allowing multiple unicast transmissions of the same content to various users. The service defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project that provides these capabilities is called Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service, which has evolved over several releases introducing enhanced capabilities. In addition, thanks to the revolution caused by the virtualization of technologies, a cloud-based multi-vendor mobile network infrastructure, among which open-source platforms stand out, has become possible. Based on the OpenAirInterface and srsRAN open-source platforms, this paper evaluates the potential of Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service specifications, such as evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service and Further evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service, for transporting content streams over mobile networks and compares the two specifications in terms of their performance.
