Vicomtech participates in the AutoMOTIF project, pioneer in multimodal transport automation in Europe
The main goal of the European initiative is to develop strategies, business models and regulatory recommendations to integrate and automate multimodal transport systems in Europe.

On 25-26th June, The AutoMOTIF project’s kick off took place in Athens. Coordinated by the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS), this initiative is part of the Horizon Europe programme, which aims to revolutionise the logistics and transport sectors with innovative supply chain and multimodal freight flow automation strategies.
With a budget of 3.9 million euros and a duration of 36 months, the project brings together a total of 17 partners from different European countries and sectors.
AutoMOTIF identifies both regulatory and technological gaps in automated transport technologies and logistics operations between multiple modes by analysing the demand for automation and supply in multimodal transport. The use cases and scenarios focus on real challenges and gaps in seamless automated logistics, which will be simulated in real environments and in different geographical locations.
Vicomtech works together with Bilbao PortLab and Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza in the creation of a tool to simulate the Automation of Port Operations in the Port of Bilbao.
In this context, Vicomtech is leading the use case of the Port Operations Automation in the Port of Bilbao, together with Bilbao PortLab and Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza.
Specifically, the centre implements a platform that allows, on the one hand, a digital replica of current operations and, on the other, a simulation of a future automated scenario. By monitoring certain indicators, it will be possible to evaluate the improvements that automation can bring to the maritime-port and logistics services offered by the shipping company.
The main technological challenges addressed by Vicomtech at AutoMOTIF focus on the representation of geo-referenced Digital Twin ecosystems, which use data and models of real environments to predict the performance of a process and are a key element in the transition from manual to automated.
With AutoMOTIF, Vicomtech joins the rest of the partners in the commitment to innovation in the Logistics and Transport sector, contributing with its knowledge and experience in Artificial Intelligence Technologies, and revolutionising processes with innovative strategies that significantly improve the interoperability and operational efficiency of multimodal transport systems in Europe.
