Abstract
Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems are a key element of the clinical practice in most hospitals and healthcare organizations. Although traditionally its role has been focused mainly as a patient health data storage and communication tool, thanks to the recent technical advancements, a wide range of new promising possibilities are arising, including, user empowerment, new medical knowledge discovery, clinical decision support systems and clinical tasks automation. This paper discusses a set of different features that can be added to a legacy EHR system to upgrade it into a Smart EHR system, such as (i) health related data curation, (ii) rule-based data processing, (iii) business process management and (iv) intelligent agents.
